The idea of retreating to the forest, the mountains, or by a lake—without sacrificing warmth and comfort—is a dream for many outdoor enthusiasts. Now, Sandström Innovation has made it possible with the newly launched Vildmarksvagnen (The Wilderness Trailer) – a year-round base for life close to nature. The response has been overwhelming. A launch video reached hundreds of thousands of views within just one day, and the wilderness trailer quickly became a viral talking point.
“It’s incredibly exciting to launch a product that we are alone in offering on the market and that has received such a positive response. We also see great opportunities to further develop it going forward,” says Niklas Sandström, Marketing Manager at Sandström Innovation.
From fishing shelter to business idea
Sandström Innovation is one of Sweden’s larger manufacturers of leisure boats, a family-owned company with roots in Norrlångträsk in northern Sweden. In addition to boats, the company also produces root cellars and other products made from glass fiber–reinforced plastic. The idea for the Wilderness Trailer originated internally from two employees with a strong interest in fishing.
“They had the idea of modifying the shell of our root cellar to create a fishing shelter for their own use.”
The company saw the potential and decided to take it further. A completely new one-off mold was developed, specifically adapted for the purpose.
“The fishing shelter was used extensively. They spent 38 nights per year in it, and everywhere they went fishing it attracted a lot of attention. Many people asked where it was bought, and we received requests to produce more.”
The recurring interest sparked a new idea.
“It made us start thinking that there might be a market for this type of product.”
A strong passion for outdoor life
The company has long experience in design and construction for Nordic climates, combined with a strong outdoor culture among its employees.
“Many of our employees are passionate about hunting, fishing, and outdoor life. They understand the needs because they are part of the target group themselves. We wanted to develop a product that we ourselves felt was missing from the market.”
A dedicated team was assembled, and development gained momentum.
“We put together a team to create the best fishing shelter on the market, but during the process we realized the product had a much broader range of applications.”
What started as a fishing shelter quickly evolved into something more versatile: a mobile hunting cabin, rest hut, logger’s cabin, forest workspace, or a portable recreational home. That’s when the Wilderness Trailer took shape.
The material that makes the difference
What most clearly sets the Wilderness Trailer apart is its choice of materials. The trailer is built from glass fiber–reinforced plastic with a rigid sandwich construction—the same type of robust technology used in demanding marine environments.
“It is made from glass fiber–reinforced plastic, making it lightweight, extremely durable, and superior to other materials. Since the structure has no joints, it is completely moisture-resistant and will never suffer from moisture damage.”
This construction allows the trailer to be left unheated without risk of mold. It offers high insulation performance and can be washed both inside and out, even with a high-pressure washer.
A viral success
The Wilderness Trailer was launched at Kelekkamessut in Rovaniemi, Finland’s largest snowmobile exhibition, where it attracted significant attention from visitors. When the company later published a video of the trailer on social media, it quickly gained traction.
“The day after the exhibition, the video had already reached several hundred thousand views. Many people got in touch, and we started receiving requests to adapt it for use as a rest cabin for contractors working in forests and remote areas.”
The company is now exploring additional features, including sanitation solutions.
Design your own trailer
Production is now in full swing, with a focus on the Nordic market. The Wilderness Trailer is offered both as a finished product and as a base structure.
“We know our target group includes many DIY enthusiasts. That’s why we want to give them the opportunity to build their own trailer and adapt it to their needs.”
The model is currently available with a snowmobile chassis, and an ATV chassis for summer use will be launched in the spring.
“This is a product we are very proud of. We feel we have created a trailer that is both robust with a long lifespan and comfortable, with a stylish design, heating, pleasant lighting, and a cozy interior. It will be exciting to continue this journey.”
